What do you mean “I have no warranty?!”

By: | Tags: | Comments: 1

Solar systems are made as a long term proposition, and luckily there are generously long warranties on the components in a solar system. The panels often have  a 10 year product warranty and a 25 year performance warranty. The inverters often have a 10 year product warranty. So, for an investment that might have a 5-7 year paybck period and a 25+ year intended lifespan, it would seem that all is well. Except that… these warranties are easily voided. In order for someone to warrant the output of a panel […]

Derisking investment in commercial solar power

By: | Tags: , , | Comments: 0

All investments carry risks, and often that goes hand in hand with the rewards. With solar power, our goal is to analyse your situation, predict the savings and benefit from solar, install the system, and manage the ongoing performance of the system. In short, our goal is to maximise and stabilise your returns. We call this derisking. Derisking is a term used commonly in investments and venture capital. When investing in a business, it is the process of identifying and eliminating risks from all sources – internal and external – […]

Bad modelling v good modelling for solar

By: | Tags: , , , | Comments: 0

There’s two main functions we carry out day in, day out. One is installing solar. Before that, though, we talk to people about solar. A lot of people. Mostly the direction we like to head is to show people what solar will do for them. This is a financial projection that takes into account a range of factors. You can read about those here. This note is about the most common error we see in other people’s proposals. A good model reflects reality and helps people make good decisions. A […]

Will solar power work if you’re a tenant?

By: | Tags: , | Comments: 0

An ideal candidate for solar is someone with a nice big roof, who owns the property they work in, and is consuming a large amount of power. And they’re fed up with paying so much for power. Every now and then we talk to these people. More often, we talk to people who meet some of these criteria but not all. Sometimes solar will work for them and sometimes not. Part of the equation might be missing. A scenario that we hear often is that people are “just renting, so […]

“Pay as you use” solar – Epho now able to offer PPA for commercial solar (Power Purchasing Agreements)

By: | Tags: , , , , , , , | Comments: 0

On 29th July 2014 Epho received confirmation that it has the appropriate exemption to offer a PPA. This opens up a new avenue for those interested in installing solar power without any upfront cost. The AER is the body that regulates the sale of electricity. This clarifies what a PPA is. In essence, for someone to sell electricity, they need to have 1. A full retail licence, or 2. An exemption from that licence. (This is what Epho now has). What does this mean? It means you can have a solar system installed […]

Why your power bill matters when we discuss a Solar Business Case

By: | Tags: , , , | Comments: 0

There is huge variability in power prices, and we’ll explain why this matters so much. Video – will solar power work for your business? An example of a 50kW system Often when we talk to people about solar they say “sure, send me a quote” or “how much is a 50kW system?”.  We understand why people ask – they want to have a feel for their investment level and to compare one supplier against another. However, there’s a bigger question. What will a 50kW, or a 100kW  – or any […]

The RET Review – what does it mean for solar customers?

By: | Tags: , , , , , | Comments: 0

Update 23rd September 2014:  The RET Review was delivered around 4 weeks ago now, and the industry has been expecting a response “any day now” which could be a game changer. It seems that the desire to cancel or limit the scheme has run into a high level of resistance with political opposition, bolstered by public support for solar. So, the outcome is even more uncertain. There are now TV campaigns and media campaigns to help the cause, and rallies due to kick off around the country.  ___ […]

The case for commercial solar power

By: | Tags: , , , , , , | Comments: 0

Solar power can have an excellent financial return… or an awful financial return. The result is predictable, and in order to find out, we need to look at two main factors – the rate you pay for power and your pattern of consumption. From that (and quite a few other details that go into our financial model) we can predict what solar will do for you. Oliver Hartley provides an overview of the business case for commercial solar power. Diagnosing your power bill to work out your returns from solar […]

No pitching

By: | Tags: , , , , | Comments: 0

The State of Missouri in the USA is called the “Show Me” state. In 1899, Congressman Willaard Vandiver said  “Frothy eloquence neither convinces nor satisfies me. I’m from Missouri, and you have got to show me.” It stuck, and that has been their unofficial motto ever since. In that spirit, we want to SHOW you what solar will do for you, not just tell  you how amazing it is in general terms. So… you won’t hear us pitching solar. This may seem like a strange statement from a solar company […]

As a result, these companies also wish to ‘step up’ and install larger systems in the 20-100 kW area. But being good at installing residential solar demands a different
